Easter Sunday
April 12, 2020
THEME: IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST
SUB-THEME: The Humanity of Christ (7)
TEXTS: Luke 23:44-66
AIMS:
- to show that Jesus Christ died as a human being and
- that He rose from the dead unlike every other human being.
INTRODUCTION: Today, the Church celebrates the resurrection from the death of our Lord Jesus Christ. Like all humans, He actually died, having on His lips with the words of Psalm 31:5, “Into thy hands I commit my spirit”. By giving up the ghost, He breathed His last. In this study we shall examine the evidences of His death, as well as His burial, a precursor for His resurrection and the implications for the faith of the Church.
STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:
- From today’s texts, narrate the story of the death of Jesus Christ.
- Identify from the following texts the evidences for the death and burial of Christ: Matt 27:50-56; Luke 23:50-56; John 19:31-36.
- How do the passages about Christ’s death and burial prove to us that He was and is human?
- What is the implication of His death, burial and resurrection for the faith we confess as Christians? 1 Cor.15:12-21
CONCLUSION: Medical science teaches that at death, water and blood separate because of the coagulation of blood. At the piercing of His body with the spear by one of the Roman soldiers, water and blood gushed out. Christ indeed died in the flesh, thus setting the stage for His glorious resurrection on Sunday morning which we celebrate today. This is a great mystery, the consummation of which will be at His second coming as we always confess at the celebration of the Holy Eucharist: “Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again”.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Mysterious!!‘The Immortal’ dies
MEMORY VERSE: 1 Cor. 15:3-4 “For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures”.
