SERMON EXCERPT : Sunday 14th April 2024

THEME: Power of Steadfastness 2

TOPIC: Living Above Sinful Desires

TEXT: Gen 1:8

PREACHER: Rev. Canon Future Billy Jonathan

Is it possible to live without a sinful Desire?

The life of Daniel is worth studying, and the lessons are apt for us today. Daniel made up his mind by;

1. Knowing the Lord's word and knowing that those foods given to them were offered unto idols.

2. Daniel had the integrity of heart. He knew the words & commands of their God.

3. Daniel knew the importance of the word of God.

The word sin is satanic inborn nature. He who practices sin is living in the nature of the Devil. Christ's nature is righteousness.

God gave us three legitimate appetites to humanity, each with a common factor and denominator.

1. Appetite for food and drink.

2. Appetite for wealth. Wealth is relative and to different degrees.

3. Appetite for worship (for protection). The need to protect oneself either in God or Satan.

The common factor and denominator amongst all these three legitimate appetites are;

1) When you eat wrongly, your health will be affected by illness, but you have life/health when you eat correctly.

2) When you pursue wealth wrongly, you will lose focus on God, but when you pursue wealth rightly, you live within the content of the word of God

3) When you worship wrongly, you will lose your soul.

It is possible to live above sinful desire. Two assertions from the Book of Common Prayer affirm this, which is the summary of the law.

Hear, O St Andrews, the Lord our God is one God; you shall love the Lord our God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength. This is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
